"Sometimes a man has to lose his bearings to find his way" is how Best Life Magazine starts off their thorough article on navigating through middle life and ending up as a better person. Best Life asked experts to help define, diagnosis and manage male midlife crises while poking holes in some of the prevalent myths surrounding the condition. Here is an excerpt of what they came up with.

Recognizing you are having a Midlife Crisis:

Here's a symptom sampler: insomnia, fatigue, despair, morbidity, inability to concentrate, ruefulness about roads not taken, dread that life holds no more surprises, regrets, sharp longing for something (a gunmetal Porsche, a cigarette boat) or someone (the FedEx woman, Gina, whose smile is a promise of overnight delivery). Men in crisis often obsess about big questions, as in, "Does my life matter?"

Common Midlife Crisis Myths:

Beloved male Myth #1: Real men are strong and studly.
New Midlife Fact: We're sorta strong and sorta studly.

Beloved Male Myth #2: Real men are successful.
New Midlife Fact: Some men are more successful than others.

Beloved Male Myth #3: Professional success will make you happy.
New Midlife Fact: Don't bet on it.

Here are some of their tips for dealing with your Midlife Crisis:

1. Strive for new ambitions. Out with the phallic, ride-to-the-rescue, assert-your-will inclination of young manhood and in with prudence, patience, experience, wisdom, kindness, temperance, judiciousness, tenacity, perspective, coolness, and style.

2. Recognize that your "boyhood" is gone. "Yes, the boy is dead. And so are his dreams. It's important to admit they're gone, sit shivah for a while, and then move on."

3. Write a New Mission Statement. Invent new goals. Aspire to achievements in your backyard, small ambitions that are within your arms' reach.

4. Express Yourself, Anger and All. Speak your piece. Forgo an excess of politeness. Conflict is rarely catastrophic; it's just the sound of life happening.

5. Leave a Legacy. At midlife, it helps to start working on what you'll leave behind.

Count On The Experiences... When you want to let your friend/ loved one know that he/ she is precious.

Final Cautionary Note:

Don't throw money at midlife. The Ferrari won't help. Nor will that titanium driver with the huge sweet spot. There's no talismanic cure. "We deny our own sense of failure," says Levinson, "by using narcissistic pleasures as a device for reassurance." Put away the credit card; it'll just add double-digit interest rates to the other stressors. The only answer, wrote Jung, is to turn directly toward the approaching darkness and "find out what it wants from you."

Hope is passive but predominant in the sense of a wish or a prayer. It is active in a plan or idea. Consider a prisoner of war who never gives up hope for escape and, against the odds, plans and accomplishes this. Hope revives the captive, rejuvenates the ailing. Fear can hold you prisoner but Hope sets you free. Each one of us live with hope and there are some people who showed us the path to Hope.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all.
Emily Dickinson

Hope is like a promise of a shore when you are in the mid sea. It is that four letter word that captures the the spirit of all human aspiration. Every single thing that is done in this world is done by hope. Hope is the last thing that dies in man; and though it is exceedingly deceitful, yet it is of this good use to us, that while we are traveling through life it conducts us in an easier and more pleasant way to our journey's end.

The Greek personified Hope as Elpis, the baby of Nyx and the mother of P heme, goddess of rumour.Hope was depicted as a young woman, usually carrying flowers or cornucopia in her hands. The story of Hope goes back in the times of Pandora, who was all gifted by the Greek Gods.Zeus gave her the most special gift-a box, famously called Pandora's box.Until then, mankind lived life in a paradise without worry. She was told not to open the box . However, Pandora's curiosity got the better of her and she opened it, releasing all the misfortunes of mankind: Once opened, she suddenly shut it to keep one thing in the jar-Hope:. The world remained extremely bleak for an unspecified interval, until Pandora "chanced" to revisit the box again, at which point Hope fluttered out. Thus, mankind always has hope in times of all evil.

People who saw Hope Against Hope

Socrates:
Socrates, the great ancient greek philosopher admited in court of law that he could have avoided the trial by abandoning his philosophy and going home to mind his own business. He was forced to commit suicide by drinking Hemlock. Socrates died but hope survived. His dream of a better society with wisdom and valuable philosophical insight in its own right, earned him great respect.

Joan of Arc

The National heroine of France,Joan of Arc was only seventeen when she plunged to recover her homeland from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. After an able leadership to the army she ordered a retreat and she assumed the place of honor as the last to leave the field .Her hope of a free motherland became a reality when France became a free nation.

Helen Keller

The famous speaker , author and social activist, Helen was truly an admirable figure with whom words like diligence and hope become synonymous. She became deaf and blind at a tender age of nineteen month. Yet she is remembered as an advocate for people with disabilities, as well as numerous causes. Her non-profit organization Helen Keller International helps prevent blindness across borders.

Martin Luther King Jr.

The American Leader of Civil Rights Movement became the youngest man to be awarded the Noble Peace Prize (for his work as a peacemaker, promoting non-violence and equal treatment for all races. Later King was assassinated. In 1986,Martin Luther King Day was established as a US Holiday. . He was known as a great public speaker. Dr. King often called for personal responsibility in fostering world peace King's most influential and well-known public address is the “I Have A Dream" speech, where he spoke about his Hope of a better world.

Gandhi

The political and spiritual visionary of India freed his countrymen from the shackles of British rule. His non-cooperation and civil disobedience movement was a major breakthrough in the struggle for independence of India. The spirit of Non-violence,truth,simplicity left hope for millions of people across the World in their struggle for existence.

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, regarded as “the saint of gutters”,lived for the cause of humanity. She founded The Missionaries of Charity, whose mission was to care for (in her own words) "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone." For her exemplary social work she was awarded the Noble Peace Prize.

February is American Heart Month and a time when many of us think about improving our diets to prevent heart disease. Seton Northwest dietitian Wendy Morgan, RD, LD, says heart healthy eating can be easier than many people think if you break it down into four basic areas: Fats, Fiber, Fruits & Vegetables and Fitness.
"We need to make it easier for people to make positive changes in their diets," says Wendy. "Many times, we go to our doctor who tells us we should just eat better. But often we have no specific guidelines so we are left to figure it out on our own. Theres so much confusing information from the media and popular magazines. Sometimes it can seem overwhelming."
"Its difficult to sort out which are good carbs, which are bad carbs or what percentage of fat and protein a heart-healthy diet should include to help prevent high cholesterol. Nobody eats percentages, they eat food, "she laughs.

Wendy offers the following four Fs for heart healthy living:

Fats
Eliminate or reduce the amount of saturated and trans fats in your diet. Foods high in saturated fats increase levels of LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. Saturated are fats found mainly in foods that come from animals and some plant sources, including:
  • Meats
  • High fat dairy products (milk, butter, cream cheese, sour cream, ice cream)
  • Certain plant-based oils (cocoa butter, tropical oils such as coconut, palm and palm kernel oil)
Trans fats are a man-made fat similar to saturated fat and also raise levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and total cholesterol. Trans fats may also raise triglycerides and lower the healthy HDL cholesterol. Trans fats are hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils and can be found in:

  • Hard stick margarines
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Snack foods (chips, crackers, cookies, bakery items like doughnuts, pastries)
  • Commercial microwave and movie popcorn (air popped is good for you)
  • Fast foods (French fries, chicken nuggets, etc.)
Choose one of two types of unsaturated fats and oils that may help lower LDL and raise healthy HDL cholesterol.

  • Monounsaturated fats are found primarily in plants and plant oils (Olive, canola and peanut oils; olives, nuts, nut butters, avocados)
  • Polyunsaturated fats are found primarily in plant foods and some fish (Safflower, sunflower, corn, cottonseed, flaxseed, sesame, soybean oils; salmon, tuna)
  • Omega 3 fatty acid, one type of polyunsaturated fat, helps lower triglicerides and reduce inflammation. Omega 3 can be found in plant oils and fish (Canola oil, flaxseed, flaxseed meal, wheat germ, walnuts, brazil nuts, pine nuts, salmon, tuna, herring, sardines, halibut)
Practical Tips:
  • Use soft tub margarines instead of stick margarine or butter.
  • Use mashed avocado mixed with plain fat free yogurt instead of mayo on a sandwich or burger.
  • Use oil based liquid salad dressings especially olive, canola, soybean oil instead of creamy dressings.
  • Use raw unsalted nuts instead of croutons in a salad.
  • Use pesto on fish, or toss with pasta instead of creamy sauces.
  • Use fat free yogurt instead of sour cream on a baked potato or in tuna salad instead of mayo.
  • Try plant based protein instead of meat on sandwiches (Soy and soy products such as tofu, textured soy protein, meat substitutes, peanut or nut butter, soy yogurt, soy cheese)
  • Mix flax meal or wheat germ into pancakes, or sprinkle on cereal.
  • Snack on raw, unsalted nuts instead or crackers, chips or non-commercial microwave popcorn (try Wendy's favorite recipe).
Fiber
Studies link high-fiber diets to reduced blood cholesterol. Fiber is found in foods from the carbohydrate family such as grains, cereals, fruits and vegetables.

  • Eat more whole grains like bread, rice, pastas, cereal.
  • Look for 100% whole wheat or whole grain on the ingredient list of food label.
  • Choose cereals with five grams of fiber per serving.
  • Eat more unprocessed or complex carbohydrates (Oats, barley, beans, legumes).
  • Include soluble fiber which is especially heart healthy (Oatmeal, oat bran, barley, beans, legumes, nuts, pectin - found in some fruits like apples)
Practical Tips:

  • Start morning with bowl plain oatmeal topped with chopped almonds, dried prunes, figs, cherries and a sprinkle of flax meal or wheat germ.
  • Increase the amount of beans in recipes like chili, stews or tacos in place of meat.
  • Add beans to a salad.
  • Use barley instead of rice.
  • Snack on homemade trail mix made from whole grain cold cereal, nuts and dried fruit.
  • Snack on bean dip or hummus instead of creamy, high fat dips.

Fruits & Vegetables

Most diet plans recommend somewhere between five and nine servings each day of these plant-based foods. Eating enough fruits and vegetables daily satisfies hunger and are:

  • Good sources of fiber.
  • Rich in B Vitamins to help maintain a healthy heart and blood vessels.
  • Full of antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Beta-carotene to help protect cells from damage.
  • Good sources of minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium to help lower blood pressure.
Practical Tips:

  • Eat whole fruits to increase fiber intake.
  • Limit juices and choose 100% juices when you do drink them.
  • Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat a rainbow - choose produce of all colors to include a range of phytonutrients.
  • Snack on fruit instead of refined sweets like cookies.
  • Snack on a salad
  • Replace your candy dish with a fruit basket.

Fitness

This F isn't about nutrition, but still vitally important to maintaining heart health. Daily activity helps:
  • Lower LDL cholesterol.
  • Raise HDL cholesterol.
  • Lower blood pressure.
  • Strengthen the heart muscle.
  • Improve blood flow.
  • Contribute to weight loss and weight maintenance.

Practical Tips:

  • Try a pedometer or step counter to encourage more walking.
  • Limit computer and TV time.
  • Use TV commercial breaks as exercise opportunities.
  • Get up and move every hour if you have a desk job.
  • Take a walk with co-workers at breaks.
  • Form a walking team with co-workers or family members and participate in fun runs.
  • Join a gym.
  • Make a home fitness kit: hand weights, rubber bands, exercise videos.
  • Check out fitness options available for I Pods, or through the internet.
  • Try a session with a personal trainer to work out a home routine.
"Diet can plan a big role in heart health and changes you make can affect your future," adds Wendy. "Remember these are general guidelines. If you have specific questions concerning cholesterol or heart disease, consult your doctor and possibly get referral to dietitian." Although a heart-healthy diet can significantly reduce cholesterol in most people, some have a genetic inclination toward high cholesterol and may need medication.

In modern times,”stress” is the biggest monster we have to combat with in everyday life Just about everybody—men, women, children and even unborn fetuses—suffer from stress. Demanding relationships, chronic health problems, work pressures , traffic snarls, meeting deadlines, growing-up tensions or a sudden bearish trend in the course can trigger stress conditions. People react to it in their own ways. In some people, stress induces adverse feelings and anxieties which tend to persist and intensify..Extreme stress conditions, psychologists say, are detrimental to human health. Today, with the rapid diversification of human activity, we come face to face with numerous causes of stress and the symptoms of stress and drepression. Learning to understand and manage stress can prevent the counter effects of stress You can learn to avoid your "stress-building" thoughts and replace them with alternative "stress-busting" thoughts! Here's 10 good ways to handle your stress:

1.Assure yourself

Try talking to yourself. You can decrease your stress by learning to talk to yourself in a reassuring way. This is what "stress-busting" is about--getting your thoughts back on a reassuring track.

2.Think Positive

Combating negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones takes practice, but the results are worth it. Don't think that you can never finish this project on time, instead think if I stay focused and concentrate, I'll make steady progress.

6.Wish or greet people

Start your morning with greeting “good morning” to people you meet. Keep a track of your friends' and colleagues' birthdays which you tend to forget,Send them a card and wish. Send a Thank you card or wish “Good Day” just to see how happy and stress-free you feel at the end of the day.

7.Listen to soothing music

Play some music that moves you. Stop what you're doing for a few minutes and really listen to the music. When you continue work, you'll feel refreshed. This will also reduce the stress level.

8.Stretches and slow breathing

Try a few simple stretches to drive stress away. Find yourself a quiet spot (the toilets will do if there's no where else suitable) and spend a few moments stretching out your arms and legs. Relax and shake out your arms and legs when you're finished.Take a moment to breath slowly and deeply. Fill your lungs then exhale completely. Just a few deep breaths will make you feel much calmer.

9.Achieve Balance and say no:

Learn to say no to offers of overtime, if it will interfere with quality time with your family. For the same reason, resist the temptation to work at weekends if you can. Balance your priorities. Earning enough to pay the bills is important, but not as important as investing time in your family.

10.Make priority lists:

Help yourself to do a better job by preparing a list of things to do in the course of each day. Make preparing it your first job, or the last of the previous day. Then make a note of the priority of each task on the list. A good plan is to find the most important and put a figure "1" by it. Then look for the next most important and mark it "2", and so on.

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, attained world wide fame for her life dedicated to serving the poor and destitute.

Mother Teresa was born (1910) in Akopje, Kosovo in what is now the Republic of Macedonia. Little is known about her early life but at a young age she felt a calling to serve through helping the poor. At the age of 18 she was given permission to join a group of nuns in Ireland. After a few months of training Mother Teresa travelled to Calcutta, India where she formally accepted the vows of a nun.

In her early years she worked as a teacher in the slums of Calcutta, the widespread poverty made a deep impression on her and this led to her starting a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”. The primary objective of this mission was to look after people, who nobody else was prepared to. The Missionaries of Charity now has branches throughout the world including branches in the developed world where they work with the homeless and people affected with AIDS. In 1965 the Society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI

At around this time the life of Mother Teresa was first brought to wide public attention through a book by Malcom Muggeridge who wrote a book and produced a documentary called “Something Beautiful for God”.

Throughout her life Mother Teresa has been given some of the most prestigious awards throughout the Globe. These include:

The first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize. (1971)

Kennedy Prize (1971)
The Nehru Prize –“for promotion of international peace and understanding”(1972)
Albert Schweitzer International Prize (1975),
The Nobel Peace Prize (1979)
States Presidential Medal of Freedom (1985)
Congressional Gold Medal (1994)
Honorary citizenship of the United States (November 16, 1996),
Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Prize "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace." She refused the conventional ceremonial banquet given to laureates, and asked that the $6,000 funds be given to the poor in Calcutta.

When Mother Teresa received the prize, she was asked, "What can we do to promote world peace?" Her answer was simple: "Go home and love your family ."

Over the last two decades of her life Mother Teresa suffered various health problems but nothing could dissuade her from fulfilling her mission of serving the poor and needy. Until her very last illness she was active in travelling around the world to the different brances of "The Missionaries of Charity"

Following Mother Teresa’s death the Vatican began the process of beatification, which is the second step on the way to canonisation and sainthood. Mother Teresa was formally beatified in October 2003 by Pope John Paul II and is now known as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

Mother Teresa was a living saint who offered a great example and inspiration to the world.

Here are some Inspirational Quotes By Mother Teresa .

Inspirational Quotes on Love by Mother teresa

It is not in the result of loving.
Of course it is natural in love to want the best for the other person,
but whether it turns out that way or not
does not determine the value
of what we have done

It is not how much we do,
but how much love we put in the doing.
It is not how much we give,
but how much love we put in the giving.

If we really want to love
we must learn how to forgive.

We can do no great things;
only small things with great love.

Quotes on God by Mother Teresa

Before you speak,
it is necessary for you to listen,
for God speaks in the silence of the heart.

There is only one God and He is God to all;
therefore it is important that everyone is seen as equal before God.
I've always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu,
a Muslim become a better Muslim,
a Catholic become a better Catholic.

Mother Teresa on Prayer

the fruit of prayer is faith
the fruit of faith is love
the fruit of love is service
the fruit of service is peace.

Feel often during the day the need for prayer and pray.
Prayer opens the heart, till it is capable of containing God himself.
Ask and seek and your heart will be big enough to receive Him
and keep Him as Your Own.

If We Pray
If we pray, we will believe;
If we believe, we will love
If we love, we will serve.

God Grant Me...
Send this serenity prayer to wish your loved ones strength and peace.

Movies mostly entertain you and make you feel better . However some Movies helps you to make a difference to society by making you a much better person .It Inspires you and encourages you to face the challenges of Life ,overcome great odds that ultimately triump over fate and adverse conditions.

These are the movies where you will watch the entire film just to enjoy the last two minutes of human triumph. They are the perennial favorites and the movies you want to share with your children, grandchildren and each other.

ITs A WONDERFUL LIFE

1947: GStarring: James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, Henry Travers
Director: Frank CapraNominated for Academy Awards® including Best Actor and Best Director

The quintessential feel good movie of all time, It's a Wonderful Life celebrates the ordinary man's extraordinary life and the impact each of us has on those around us. It reminds us of what is important, that wealth comes not from what you own but what you give and that each man is truly rich if he has friends.

CHARIOTS OF FIRE

1981: PGStarring: Ben Cross, Ian CharlesonNigel HaversDirector: Hugh Hudson

Winner of 4 Academy Awards® including Best Picture The true story of two young athletes who ran for Great Britain in the 1924 Paris Olympics, Chariots of Fire crosses into the bigotry of the day and how sports and common goal can bring each out of the hate. Protestant Eric Liddell runs to be closer to God. Jewish Harold Abrahams runs for the love of it but is consistently taunted for his faith. Together their competitive nature forges a friendship where both ultimately race to victory to the tune of Vangelis's unforgettable musical score.

GANDHI

1982: PGStarring: Ben Kingsley, John Gielgud, Rohini Hattangadi, Martin Sheen, Candice Bergen Director: Sir Richard Attenborough

Winner of 9 Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor

Mohandas K. Gandhi, introduced the doctrine of nonviolent resistance to the colonized people of India. This was a radical idea and one difficult to follow, especially in the face of constant oppression, dehumanization and murder. Ultimately the Indian's gained their independence. The philosophies of Gandhi carried into American Society supporting and galvanizing American Civil Rights Movement

In today's violent world encompassing the Occupied Territories of the Middle East, Chechnya and Africa, a man of Gandhi's caliber is even more remarkable and increasingly needed. This film reminds us that it is not force that delivers freedom. It is perseverance, a respect for human dignity and quiet disobedience in the face of tyranny that becomes the deliver of the oppressed. Like all stories of good and evil, Gandhi reminds each viewer of the story that even in the face of excruciating oppression, holders of the truth with respect for their fellow man always in the end prevail. This is a great movie to watch when you become so frustrated with current affairs, hope for eventual peace seems an impossible dream. Gandhi will restore your faith.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC
1965: GStarring: Julie Andrews, Christopher PlummerDirector: Robert Wise.

The opening scene of Julie Andrews singing "The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music" alone is enough to fill you with inspiration. But this Roger's and Hammerstein classic based upon the true story of the von Trapp family's flight from Nazi controlled Austria in 1938 delivers so much more. It's a story about God's will where a young woman finds her calling isn't the church but to be a mother to six children. It's about wringing a man from the clutches of grief and reintroducing him to his family and the joys of life he once thought he lost. It covers the crisis of conscience when political events force you to choose between duty to country and morality and ultimately force you to leave everything behind except your family and its love. Finally it's about the passion that develops when God brings two people together as one. The Sound of Music is inspirational on many levels whether its the story, the courage, the message or the music, few can experience it without being touched for a lifetime.

A BEAUTIFUL MIND
2002: RStarring: Russell Crowe,Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Christopher PlummerDirector: Ron Howard136 Minutes4 Academy Awards® including best Picture

Taming the demons inside, in this case genius John Nash's schizophrenia will take you into the world of imagined reality and the cruelty others have towards a disease they don't understand. A study in mind over matter that can be empathized by anyone struggling with a disability or addiction, A Beautiful Mind is complex, heart-wrenching and a testament to the power of marital love, facing reality, never giving up and overcoming the odds

Making the Most of Life

If I can throw a single ray of light across the darkened pathway of another; if I can aid some soul to clearer sight of life and duty, and thus bless my brother; if I can wipe from any human cheek a tear, I shall not have lived my life in vain while here.

If I can guide some erring one to truth, inspire within his heart a sense of duty; if I can plant within my soul of rosy youth a sense of right, a love of truth and beauty; if I can teach one man that God and heaven are near, I shall not then have lived in vain while here.

If from my mind I banish doubt and fear, and keep my life attuned to love and kindness; if I can scatter light and hope and cheer, and help remove the curse of mental blindness; if I can make more joy, more hope, less pain, I shall not have lived and loved in vain.

If by life's roadside I can plant a tree, beneath whose shade some wearied head may rest, though I may never share its beauty, I shall yet be truly blest--though no one knows my name, nor drops a flower upon my grave, I shall not have lived in vain while here.

Ideals

Remember that ideals
are like stars up in the sky,
You can never really reach them,
hanging in the heavens high....
But like the mighty mariner
who sailed the storm-tossed sea,
And used the stars to chart his course
with skill and certainty,
You too can chart your course in life
with high ideals and love,
For high ideals are like the stars
that light the sky above....
You cannot ever reach them,
but lift your heart up high
And your life will be as shining
as the stars up in the sky.
