Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for developing coronary artery disease and other risk factors among which obesity is a major disease and is quite infectious among all age brackets. A little ignorance towards health might lead to obesity. A fitness regimen is a basic necessity apart from a balanced diet to fight obesity. Physical activities help one to burn out the extra fat that is gained through improper lifestyle and is a must for those who suffer from obesity or is about to get affected. Obesity, if not treated at the right time might affect one’s psychology which in turn would cause various complexes in mind.

Regular exercise helps to keep your weight down. It also helps to relieve stress and makes you feel good. If you are busy, try to squeeze in some activities into your routine. You can start by:

  • Getting off a bus-stop earlier and walking the remaining distance
  • Walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift
  • Walking to a place further away for lunch and back to office instead of taking the bus or MRT
  • Park further away and walk to your destination
  • Start on an aerobic exercise program.

Exercise vigorously (jogging, swimming, fast cycling, aerobic dancing) for 20 minutes at least three times a week or more till you perspire and breathe deeply without getting breathless. Or you can exercise at a moderate intensity (brisk walking, cycling, yoga, line dancing, and swimming) for 30 minutes at least five times or more a week. Activities such as soccer and basketball that include continuous running are the best enemies of obesity.

Even moderate-intensity activities, when performed daily, can have some long-term health benefits. They help lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Here are some examples:

  • Walking for pleasure, gardening and yard work
  • Housework, dancing and prescribed home exercise
  • Recreational activities such as tennis, racquetball, soccer, basketball and touch football.
